CCF Sunday Service - The Book of James Series 5 : Real Faith Experiences God's Power

CCF Sunday Service - The Book of James Series  5 : Real Faith Experiences God's Power
WORD: James 5:7-20

Patience in Suffering
7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!

10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.

The Prayer of Faith
13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

Theme: Real Faith Experiences God’s Power

In the closing part of the book of James, believers are taught how genuine faith behaves during suffering, prayer, and community life. The CCF message highlights that real faith is not passive—it is demonstrated through endurance, prayer, and restoring others.

1. Real Faith Waits Patiently for the Lord (James 5:7–11)

Key message: Endure suffering with hope.

James encourages believers to be patient until the coming of the Lord. Christians in the early church were suffering persecution and injustice, but instead of retaliating, they were called to trust God’s timing.

Illustrations used in the passage
  • The Farmer
    • Farmers wait for the early and late rains.
    • They cannot rush the harvest.
    • Meaning: Believers must wait patiently for God’s work and justice.
  • The Prophets
    • They suffered while faithfully speaking God's message.
  • Job
    • Job endured extreme suffering but remained faithful.
    • God eventually restored him.
Real faith looks beyond present suffering and trusts God's future reward. God is compassionate and merciful, even when circumstances are difficult.

Application:
  • When life feels unfair:
    • Do not retaliate
    • Trust God’s justice
    • Remain faithful

2. Real Faith Controls the Tongue (James 5:9–12)

James warns believers about two sins of speech.
  1. Do not complain against one another
  2. Complaining or grumbling destroys unity in the church.
Why this matters:
  • The Judge is standing at the door
  • God sees how we treat others.
  • Do not swear falsely
  • Instead of making dramatic promises or oaths: “Let your yes be yes and your no be no.”
Meaning:
  • Christians must be people of truth and integrity.
Application
  • Real faith is seen in how we speak:
    • No gossip
    • No complaining
    • No dishonest words

3. Real Faith Turns to Prayer in Every Situation (James 5:13–18)

This section shows how believers experience God’s power through prayer.

James describes three situations:
  • If someone is suffering → Prayer
    • Prayer should be the first response to hardship.
  • If someone is happy → Praise God
    • Faith recognizes that blessings come from God.
  • If someone is sick → Call the elders
    • The elders pray and anoint the person with oil.
Key teaching:
“The prayer of faith will restore the sick.”

This shows that:
  • God heals
  • God forgives
  • Prayer is powerful.
Confess and pray for one another
  • Confession brings:
    • spiritual healing
    • restored relationships.
Example: Elijah
  • Elijah prayed and:
    • it stopped raining for 3½ years
    • rain returned when he prayed again.
The point:
Elijah was an ordinary person, but his prayers were powerful because he trusted God.

Real faith depends on prayer, not human strength.

4. Real Faith Restores Those Who Wander (James 5:19–20)

James ends the letter with a strong call to care for believers who drift away from the truth.

If someone turns back a wandering believer:
  • they save that person from spiritual destruction
  • they help cover many sins.
Meaning:
Christians should not ignore spiritual problems in others.

Instead:
  • guide them back
  • restore them in love.
Application
  • Real faith cares about the spiritual condition of others.
Main Message of the Passage

Real faith experiences God’s power through:
  • Patient endurance in suffering
  • Integrity in speech
  • Persistent prayer
  • Restoring others in love
Faith is not just belief—it is lived out daily in trusting God, praying to Him, and helping others follow Him.

James 5:7–20 teaches that believers who truly trust God will:
  • Wait patiently for the Lord’s justice
  • Speak truthfully and avoid complaining
  • Depend on prayer in every situation
  • Help restore people who wander from faith
When believers live this way, they experience the power of God in their lives and in their community.
